- Ask if they are a full time guide or part-time and how long they have been in business. Part-time guides have another job they have to go to and can’t be on the lake enough to stay on fish consistently.
- Do they have a brochure they can send you or give to you when you get on the boat? You can use the brochure as a contract. If they have it in print, they will have to stand behind what it says.
- How many hours should you expect to fish for the fee you are paying?
- What do you need to bring or have for the trip? Clothes pertaining to the weather, fishing license, food and drinks, ice chest for the food and drinks, ice chest to carry your fish home, sun screen and sunglasses.
- Can they clean your catch on the lake or when you get in?
- Will there be any other cost to you at the end of the day, other than cleaning the fish?
- How much bait is provided for each person fishing?
- Sometimes when you read that they guarantee fish, you may still have to pay as soon as you catch the first fish. There is no plural to fish.
- Ask friends or someone you know that fishes a lot to suggest someone they know or someone they've been out with or have heard of. Try and find someone who can refer you to a good guide.
- The saying "You get what you pay for" really holds true when hiring a fishing guide.
